Telugu baby names: a guide for parents
Telugu names are often rooted in Sanskrit, and many are the names of gods, goddesses, rivers and virtues. This guide covers common ways Telugu families choose a name and how to avoid spelling problems.
Where Telugu names come from
Most Telugu names come from a few sources:
- Names of gods and goddesses, such as Venkatesh, Lakshmi, Shiva, Krishna and Parvati.
- Words for nature, such as river, flower, moon and sun.
- Virtues, such as brave, wise, joyful and kind.
- A grandparent's name, which many families like to pass on.
- The family deity, often the deity of the home town.
The Nakshatra starting letter
Many Telugu families begin with the starting letter of the baby's Nakshatra Pada, then look through names that begin with it. AAGO lists names for each Pada so you can see them in Telugu script too.
Family name and given name order
In many Telugu families the family or house name is written first, usually as an initial, followed by the given name. Official records often expect the given name first. Decide how the name should appear on forms before you finalise it, so that school records, Aadhaar and the passport all match.
Getting the spelling right
Telugu has long and short vowels, and the same name can be written in English in more than one way. For example, a name can be written with one or two letters for the same sound. Pick one spelling and use it everywhere.
Write the name in Telugu script as well, and ask an elder to check it. Each AAGO name page shows the Telugu spelling beside the English one.
Short names and long names
Telugu families often use a short everyday name along with a longer formal name. A short, clear first name is easier on school forms and abroad, and the longer version can be used for ceremonies.
