How to choose a baby name: a simple guide

Choosing a name is exciting, and it can also feel like a big decision. This guide breaks it into small steps you can do together as a family, in any order.

1. Decide what matters most to your family

Sit down with your partner and talk about what you want from the name. Some families want a name from a particular god or goddess. Others want a short modern name, or a name that honours a grandparent.

Write down three or four things that matter. This makes it easier to say no to names that do not fit, and it keeps the list short.

2. Check the starting letter if your family follows the Nakshatra

Many Telugu and South Indian families pick the first letter from the baby's Nakshatra and Pada, which come from the position of the Moon at birth. If your family does this, find the Nakshatra first and then look only at names that start with the right letter.

If your family does not follow this, you can skip the step completely. It is a tradition, not a rule for everyone.

3. Look at the meaning, then check it with someone who knows the language

A good name has a meaning you are glad to say every day. Read the meaning, and then ask an elder or a native speaker if it sounds right to them. A word can mean one thing in Sanskrit and another in everyday speech, so a second opinion is worth it.

4. Say it aloud, and write it down

Say the full name out loud a few times, with the surname. Then write it in English and in your own script. Notice if it is easy to say, easy to spell and easy for relatives to remember.

  • Does it sound clear when someone calls it across a room?
  • Is there more than one common way to spell it? Pick one and keep to it.
  • Is there a short, sweet pet name that comes with it?

5. Test it with the surname and the initials

Put the name next to your surname and look at the initials. Check that the initials do not spell an unlucky or unwanted word. In many Telugu families the family name comes first, so check the initials in that order too.

6. Think about school, forms and documents

The spelling you choose will appear on the birth certificate, school records, Aadhaar and the passport. Changing a name later takes time and paperwork, so fix the spelling now. Check with your local registrar for the current rules about adding or changing a name after the birth is registered.

7. Sleep on it, then decide

Keep a shortlist of three to five names. Live with it for a few days. The name that you keep returning to is usually the right one. You can use the AAGO shortlist and family voting page to share the names and let relatives vote.

Frequently asked questions

When should we decide the name?

There is no single rule. Many families decide before the naming ceremony. Birth registration rules differ by state, so ask the hospital or the local registrar how long you have.

Do we have to use a name from the Nakshatra letter?

No. It is a tradition many families follow, and many others do not. Choose what suits your family.

Can a name have two parts?

Yes. Many families use a short everyday name and a longer formal name. Decide which one goes on the documents.
