AAGO Jathakam

Jathakam (జాతకం) with Jataka Chakram

Enter the date, time and place of birth to see the Rashi chakram and the Navamsa chakram with the nine grahas, the Lagna, the Nakshatra and Pada, and a simple explanation of each, in Telugu and English.

Pick the nearest city. The place decides the Lagna (rising sign). A town within about 100 km gives the same chart in most cases.

How to read the chart

  1. The chart has twelve boxes, one for each Rashi. In the South Indian style they never move: Mesha is always second from the left in the top row, and the signs run clockwise.
  2. The box with a slanted line in the corner is the Lagna. That is the first house.
  3. Count clockwise from the Lagna box to find the second, third and later houses.
  4. The letters in a box are the grahas that were in that sign at birth. Ra is Rahu and Ke is Ketu. A bracket (వ) marks vakri, a graha that seems to move backwards.
  5. The Moon's box tells you the Rashi, and its star gives the Nakshatra and the letter for the name. See our Nakshatra name lists.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Jathakam (Janma Kundali)?

A Jathakam, also called a Janma Kundali or Jataka Chakram, is a map of the sky at the moment and place of birth. It shows the sign (Rashi) each of the nine grahas was in, and which sign was rising on the eastern horizon, called the Lagna.

Why do you ask for the place of birth?

The positions of the grahas in the sky depend only on the time. The Lagna, the rising sign, also depends on where on Earth the baby was born, because it changes about every two hours and is different in different places. That is why the place is needed for the full chart, while our Nakshatra finder needs only the time.

What are the nine grahas?

Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Kuja (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), and the two shadow points Rahu and Ketu, which are the places where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path.

What is the Navamsa chart?

The Navamsa (D-9) divides each sign into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes. It is a second chart that many families read alongside the Rashi chart, especially for marriage and for the deeper nature of each graha.

How accurate is the chart?

The positions are calculated from astronomical formulas and checked against the Swiss Ephemeris, a standard reference, to a fraction of a minute of arc. The result still depends on the exact birth time you enter. The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, so a few minutes can matter near the edge, and we warn you when it does.

Which settings does AAGO use?

The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which most Indian panchangams use, the true positions of the planets, mean Rahu with Ketu opposite, and whole-sign houses in the South Indian style. Other software can use different settings, so small differences are possible.

Does this predict my baby's future?

No. The page shows the chart and explains in plain words what each graha and house traditionally stands for. It does not give predictions, dashas or yogas, and it is not a replacement for your family astrologer or priest.

Are the birth details saved?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser, and the date, time, place and name are not sent to us or stored.
